Mast Collar

Can any one please tell me how, on a mk1, the collar on the mast that takes the rigging is held in place. It looks like a bolt through the mast. I've spoken to CC and they screw them these days.
Trevor Dyer (Sea Jay no.34)
Hi Trevor,
Mine has a bolt straight through it.

Have look on the SOA Website under Technical Tips/Owner's Handbooks where you will find the kit assembly instructions. Scroll through to page 8 and you will see a drawing of the mast showing the band secured with a through bolt. I had mine off to refurbish the mast a few years ago and from memory it is M10, but I can't remember the length. The original is galvanized steel, but I replaced with SS.
I hope this helps.

Thanks. I'll measure and get a bolt. Have you had any problems with a stainless bolt and galvanised collar?
Trevor.
No problems so far, Trevor. Most of the galvanised fittings on my boat are fastened with SS and very few are showing any sign of rust, even those likely to get the odd dousing with seawater. I work on the principle that, although zinzc and SS might react according to the corrosion table, this fitting, in particular, is about 22 ft above the waterline and is therefore unlikely to be in contact with salt water.
I still have the original galvanised bolt from the mast band and can confirm the size to be M10 x 120 mm long. I suspect yours will be similar. To be honest, the condition is not too bad. Some rusting in on the threads and the nut, but elsewhere the galvanising is still good so it could have been re-used if I had not been able to get a replacement. Not bad after 20 years.

Again thank you.
When I bought the boat as I've said before the previous 2 owners only stripped the boat and revarnished the spars so I only have them and a box of bits and nuts and bolts and it's taking time to work through the lot. I'll probably be asking many more questions yet if that's ok.
I've replaced the bow eye, the centre plate bolt, lifting wire and rope, cut 4 holes to put in port holes which it did not have, stripped the interior and repainted, stripped the wood and bulk head, relaminated the bulkhead and oiled the lot. Just about to fit new electronics and radio. Then paint the exterior and remove the old antifouling and hopefully launch.
I'm aiming to launch in April, so not long to go!!!!!!!!!

Have a look at the Tech/Owners Handbooks section of the SOA website. The Rigging Instructions & Kit Assembly Instructions should provide much of the info you need to get your boat rigged. The kit instructions might be particularly useful at this stage as they list which fastenings to use for which parts.
Otherwise I am happy to help if and when needed.

Again thanks.
I've just printed out all the instructions on the website so hopefully will not have to bother you too much.

Trevor,
I removed my collar a few year ago (remove stainless steal bolt and tap the collar towards the top of the mast)
I discovered that that mast was beginning to rot around the bottom of the collar position.
Fortunately I caught it just in time and retrieved the position with wood hardner and filler.
Moral: ensure that the collar is properly sealed top and bottom (especially top) and it is checked each year.

Due to being rammed, my collar became loose. It was refitted resin and bolted. It has not moved since.
