Corrosion on a Mariner Outboard Engine

I have a 15 year old Mariner 5 Outboard which is now suffering from corrosion on the shaft and underside of the engine casing. Last winter I wirebrushed off all the corrosion and then used etching primer and spray painted a top coat. This looked good but by the end of the season the corrosion had returned.

I am now faced with repeating this rather tedious process.

I am reluctant to bin the engine as it runs perfectly. Has anyone any ideas for a permanent solution to the problem?

I'm not sure there is one.  I have a 25 year old Mariner 5 that suffers the same problem.  So far I have cleaned off and repainted the leg and underside of the powerhead twice in six years, with a few touch-ups in between, but the corrosion has always come back.  Like you, I'm reluctant to bin the engine as it still runs perfectly and have now resigned myself to having a rather tatty looking outboard.  The evidence points to Mariners, and most US engines for that matter, not being intended for use in salt water.  Most US leisure waters are fresh and my handbook says to rinse in fresh water after and clean down every time it is used on the sea.  This must indicate something.

Sorry I can't offer anything better.

Regards

Keith

Hi Peter

I had a similar problem with my 17 year old mariner. I used Hammerite non ferrous metal primer followed by Mariner spray top coat.
The first year wasn't so good, so I redid it. I also put on a new anode. This helped alot and now I change it more regularly. The paint is now lasting well.

Hope this helps
